Nalanda Travel GuideNalanda is an ancient city which dates back 5th century AD. Nalanda is situated at the distance of 11 km from Rajagir, 90 km from Patna (the capital city of Bihar) and 62 km from Bodhgaya (a world famous Buddhist site). Nalanda is the historical place in the state of Bihar, India. Nalanda was worldwide famous for its University of Buddhist learning. The land of Nalanda was the major learning centre of Buddhism in ancient times. Still Nalanda is famous for ruins internationally famous University of Buddhist learning. Among these attractions, the ruin of Nalanda University is the most predominant attraction. The ruin of Nalanda University is spread over in the area of 14 hectares. The Nalanda Archaeological Museum contains ancient coins, potteries, stone inscriptions, copper plates, samples of burnt rice of 12 the century. Places to See in Nalanda : Hieun Tsang Memorial Hall This is a fairly new construction in memory of the famous Chinese traveller, Hieun Tsang. Nalanda University Ruins Archaeological Complex The total area of the excavation is about 14 hectares and all the edifices are of the red brick with beautiful gardens surrounding them. The buildings are divided by a central walk way that goes south to north. The monasteries or "Viharas" are east of this central alley and the temple or "Chaiyas" to the west. It is adorned by big statues of Lord Buddha. Nalanda Archaeological Museum Opposite the entrance to the ruins of the university and houses, there is a small but beautiful collection of Buddhist and Hindu bronzes and a number of undamaged statues of the Lord Buddha that were found in the area. Two enormous terra-cotta jars of the first century stand intact behind the museum in a shaded enclosure. Lauria Areraj An 11.5 m high Ashokan column was erected here in 249 BC. The site is only 30 Km from Motihari; Lauria Nandangarh 23 Km from Bettiah and 14 Km from Shikarpur, it has the famous lion pillar erected by Ashoka. How to Reach : By Air : To arrive in Nalanda, the nearest airport is in Patna, the capital of Bihar, India. Patna is located at the distance of 90 km from Nalanda. Patna is well connected with Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, etc. By Rail : To arrive in Nalanda the nearest Railway Station is Bakhtiyarpur in the district of Patna, Bihar, India. Bakhtiyarpur is the place where Bakhtiar Khilji took a halt after destroying the Nalanda University. It is at the distance of 38 km from Nalanda. One can also go Nalanda from Gaya Railway Station. Gaya is at the distance of around 65 km from Nalanda. By Road : The historical place of Nalanda is well-connected by road with the cities like Patna, Gaya, Kolkata, etc.
