Puri Travel GuidePuri is a holy town for Hindus and is located on the eastern coast of India. Easily accessible from almost all major towns and cities of India, its wide beaches offering breathtaking views of sunrise and sunset, fishing farms and excellent resorts make it an important tourist destination. The famous temple of Lord Jagannath along with the annual Rath yatra festival bring thousands of tourists every year. The Jagannath Temple is among four most important Hindu pilgrimages, or the chardham, the other three being Dwarka, Badrinath and Rameshwaram.Places to See in Puri : Jagannath Temple : A visit to Puri is incomplete without a visit to the Jagannath temple, one of the four sacred dhams in the Hindu religion. The magnificent temple is dedicated to the Lord of the Universe. Built in the 12th century, it is considered to be one of the tallest (65 m) temples in India. Modelled along the Kalinga style of architecture, the temple consists of the Jagmohanor hall and the Deul or the main shrine, in front. The Nata Mandir and the Bhoga Mandir were built much later in the 14th and 15th century, in the classic Orissa style. Gundicha Ghar : The Gundicha Ghar having been the house of Lord Krishna’s aunt, Gundicha is another important site to visit in Puri. It is believed that, the Lord stays here for 9 days during the famous Rath yatra or chariot-pulling festival of Puri. On the day of the Rath Yatra, Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are ceremoniously taken around in gorgeously decorated wooden raths (chariot) all the way from the Jagannath temple to the Gundicha temple where they are welcomed by their aunt by feeding them padoapitha (rice cakes). Puri Beach : Puri beach is set apart by its utter simplicity, the local sweet and snacks hawkers, the warm people and the extensive stretches of white sand with the sea water swishing over your feet. A lazy stroll by the sea with a few sips of hot tea or tender coconut water adds to that delightful experience. Moreover, you can also request the local boatmen for a ride. How to Reach : By Air : Access to Puri is quite convenient and hassle free by air and the nearest airport is Biju Patnail Airport located 60 kms from Puri in Bhubaneshwar. The major domestic carriers like Indian, Jet, Sahara, and Deccan operate regular flights from New Delhi, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mumbai. By Rail : The railway terminus of the city offers express and super-fast train connections with New Mumbai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata and Baidyanath Dham. Puri also has excellent rail connections with Tirupati, Okha and Ahmedabad. Puri falls under the jurisdiction of S.E. Railway. By Road : Road transport is equally commendable and you can reach Puri from the important cities of India. From Bhubaneshwar it is a 60 kms drive on state highway. The main bus stand is located nearby Gundicha Mandir on Grand Road and regular bus services to the nearby destinations such as Konark and Bhubaneshwar are available. The roads are well-maintained and reaching Puri by road is very convenient.
